How Chiropractors Help Nerve Pain

by Author

Nerve pain can be precipitated by a variety of different causes and potentially result in significant pain and debilitation. Those impacted often seek the help of various medical professionals. That said, people sometimes overlook the benefits that may be provided by consulting with a chiropractor. On certain occasions, there can be a direct correlation between chiropractors and nerve pain.

Neuropathy

Chiropractors might be able to offer patients relief from the pain associated with a basic nerve malady known as neuropathy. This condition is precipitated by disease or injury to various bodily nerves. Neuropathy can occur anywhere in the body but most commonly impacts an individual’s limbs, hands or feet.

Physical Manifestations Associated With Nerve Pain

Specific symptoms will occur in accordance with the type of neuropathy causing the nerve damage, as well as the specific bodily region within where such issues have arisen. That said, impacted persons might experience certain common symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the region where the damaged nerves are located, pain, mobility challenges, stiffness and sleep disturbances.

Specific Neuropathies

Diabetic Neuropathy

Individuals with diabetes experience wild fluctuations in systemic concentrations of blood sugar. This problem could exert a significantly adverse impact on the body’s nerves. Diabetes-induced neuropathy is divided into several categories, peripheral (in which symptoms occur mainly in the individual in question’s limbs, hands, and feet), proximal (which can impact the thighs, hips and buttocks regions) and mononeuropathy (impacting one specific nerve inside a stricken person’s leg or torso).

Sciatica

This condition is often precipitated by the deterioration of the nerves in an afflicted individual’s spine or back. In many instances, damaged nerves cause radiating pain in the lower back and down the legs.

Pinched Nerves

Pinched nerves, also medically categorized as radiculopathy, occur when damaged or diseased surrounding structures like bones, muscle and connective tissues like cartilage press against an impacted nerve. Though most common in the neck, pinched nerves can occur anywhere in the body.

Chiropractors And Nerve Pain

Depending upon the specific underlying cause and severity, neuropathy may or may not be curable. Regardless, chiropractors can execute certain techniques that might provide relief to a stricken individual. Such methods include:

Massage Therapy

A chiropractic professional manipulates the muscles and surrounding tissues of impacted nerves to increase blood flow. Such practices might reduce inflammation and stimulate the healing process.

Electrostimulation

Electrical impulses are applied to the tissues surrounding the nerves in question. This procedure is believed to provide relief by blocking electrical pain impulses transmitted by the brain, which often precipitates the discomfort associated with nerve damage.

Chiropractic Adjustments and Nerve Pain

Chiropractors perform adjustments by executing a specific amount of acute force over a bodily region impacted by neuropathy. This is done to alleviate pressure or realign diseases or damaged nerves and could alleviate the pain and other physical manifestations associated with certain kinds of neuropathy.
