Treating Scoliosis and Chiropractic Care

by Author

Scoliosis and chiropractic care go hand in hand. Patients of Scoliosis are the most types of patients at Chiropractic care centers like Proactive Chiropractic. Children are the largest group who are affected by scoliosis, but it is common in adults as well. They can get help for this common condition by getting some chiropractic help. Find out more about what help you can get below.

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a disorder of the spine where the spine is curved sideways. The curves can appear in C-shape or S-shape. Idiopathic is the most common form of scoliosis, accounting for 80% of the cases. This form of scoliosis means that there is no known cause of the condition. Other forms can include Congenital Curve, Paralytic Curve, Myopathic Deformity, and Secondary.

Who Is Affected?

Scoliosis affects around 2-3% of the population, meaning 6 and 9 million people in total, in the United States alone. Children aged 10-15 years make up the largest group of people who are affected by this condition. In most cases, girls are more often affected by more severe cases then boys. There is also a growing population of adults with the condition.

What Causes Scoliosis?

Cases other than Idiopathic do have known cases that make it easier to treat them. Some are listed below:

  • Issues from birth, like an abnormally formed vertebrae
  • Muscles don’t work
  • Muscles don’t work like they are supposed to
  • Other cases like osteoporosis, degeneration or osteomalacia

What Are The Signs And Symptoms?

There are some physical signs that you may want to look for like:

  • Uneven shoulder
  • A lower back hump or rib hump
  • Uneven hips

The Cobb Method

The Cobb method is used to measure the curve as part of the diagnosis. A negative diagnosis is a curve smaller than 10 degrees –anything above that is a positive diagnosis. If the curve is more than 25-30 degree, it is significant and if it goes up to 45-50 degrees than it is considered highly severe.

How Is Scoliosis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis for scoliosis is made using a combination of a physical examination, X-Rays of the spine, family history, and medical history. Signs of scoliosis can be easily missed since they are subtle, which is why it is important to get a consultation by a professional.

What Are The Treatment Options?

There are many different options that one can use to treat their scoliosis. These include bracing, observation, and chiropractic care. The best option you can choose is to go to a scoliosis chiropractor since studies show active scoliosis treatment with chiropractic care can help improve pain scores and the Cobb angles. Clinics like Proactive Chiropractic provide an adult brace which improves posture, reduces pressure, relieves pain, and a lot more. You don’t have to suffer through scoliosis anymore since treatment is readily available.
